I think I saw something like that in dd2 or dd1 missions... never in losv. Maybe it is just me lol, but it was new for me.
So an object with property "MINEFIELD" spreds some mines around, which can be seen on the terain, if you look carefull enough... you might even get through the minefield alive, cause only those small mines are dangerous. their position seems to be random.

Na, Im working on an "empty spot" in our map making series.
Good guess though, makes sence.
